和平西街已经变成和平里北街了 -_-b

Taking transit is part of the survival skills for a (childhood) resident in a metropolitan area.

The surface buses had a major improvement in stop drive-in. In Toronto usually one street is served by only one route and it’s totally rare to see two buses docking in the same stop at the same time. But here it is just so common to see at least 2 to 3 buses approaching the same stop in the slightest busy streets. Herds of people taking off, getting on and transferring used to be completely chaotic. Somewhere in my absence apparently a new mark up system was introduced for drivers to park at positions assigned for the specific route (some ahead, some back) at each stop, so the stop can instantaneously accommodate more vehicles. Designated waiting areas were also painted on the street and the passengers were required to board from only one door (the front or the middle) and leave from the other (or the other two), depending on the type of the vehicle. Automated fare collection is available and actually >90% of the passengers would used the transit IC card. Currently a $1 cash fare would actually cost only 40 cents if an IC card were used instead, although it’s unclear if this is a short-term promotion for the new IC card system or a long-term policy to encourage use of public transit. Bus attendants are still available in most heavy routes. Vehicles in service vary greatly in design. There was an insane amount of effort and public discomfort when the new systems in boarding order and fare collection were first introduced, but now apparently it’s starting to pay off.

The subway lines are now completely color and number coded. Stations are incredibly bilingual despite general problems in style (mostly Chinese-British, but comprehensible). The newest trains are air-conditioned, fully equipped with electronic stop announcement system, on board TV, with fully joined compartments (accessible from front to rear). Old trains with married cars and fan ventilation were also in sight. After the train parks it takes a few seconds before the door opens and I’d imagine more efficiency by getting rid of this wait. The trains are all domestic manufacture and maybe we should steal some technology from Bombardier later.

Instead of the just-climb-upstairs-transfer, in most transfer stations a detour in the length of 3 times of the Spadina passage way would be mandatory. In the newest transfer stations an automated walkway (those in the airport) was introduced to partly alleviate this inconvenience. No escalator was seen in station entrances, which precludes the station from being accessible, and we could certainly be reminded/suggested/blamed/attacked on this issue in the upcoming paralympics. The station closest to my home is air conditioned at the ground level. But the upper train level then receives all the hot air and direct sunlight during daytime, and is thus still baking hot as it was a few years ago. I always regard this as a design flaw and it doesn’t seem be possibly addressed soon.

The sentiment can be no better felt if you have been part of what it was 10 years ago.

Mayday 31st

题不符实,一路上平稳的令人发指,颠都没带颠一下的。

家里东西派送得干干净净,行李直到最后一天才封箱。从表师兄家里借来的正面30cm*30cm的体重秤,箱子放上去把读数盘盖得密不透风。电话里把手持箱子歪眼瞥重量的设计B4了一遍之后,决定采用更加脑残无极限的方案,拿来4瓶刚买的饮料支出四根柱子(运动饮料瓶就是比矿泉水瓶结实..),把箱子架起来再趴在地上拿手电勘探表盘读数,最终两件都正好押在51lbs的线上。思前想后备好几套方案,带着背水一拼RP的觉悟,万一遇人不淑就开始按预定程序往外顺序扔衣服,不过最后大叔对一个50.5和另一个51 都挥挥手直接放行,随身行李也果然无人过问,于是那件红色的NHL外套,黄色的单被,还有黑色的手提箱一件不落地统统走私出线。

镜头闪过13hrs…飞机上装了VOD的直接后果就是掌舵的一路上闭嘴开车,一句嗑都懒得唠,俨然潜台词是该吃吃该睡睡该看电影自己一边去看电影。落地之后一路慢吞吞滑行,窗外平房无数,心下大骇按理说新楼不应该是给盖成了这么一群小趴趴房,直到20分钟在门口趴好看清楚之后才觉得不是太冷。家慈在机场出口拿着相机一通手颤乱排,回家一看没有一张是清楚的。

家里全都还是老样子。墙还是脏的一塌糊涂,睡觉决无担心早上起来会腰疼,在屋里穿短袖而不是羽绒服,厕所里面依旧是两个大水桶。外面空气有点干,汽车尾气很新鲜,嗓子有点疼,坐车刷卡貌似很好玩,双层车一下子怎么突然好旧好破,下层的天花板实在太低。翻出高中时候杂七杂八的卡带在室内卡拉OK,把论文和辞典摆上书架,同时严重考虑是不是应该签售统统拍卖掉库存的海量GRE资料。前一页上送别拥抱体温灼出的焦黄打包收进箱底,面前崭新平整的空白上,只有笔尖再划过时才察觉到的翻页前匆匆几笔的印迹。

Mile Millionaire

今天早上aeroplan最新垃圾邮件里面号称下周要搞1M aeroplan miles的抽奖 还故作神秘遮遮掩掩de"敬请期待"
由于内建"眼目明朗"特殊属性 俺历来不会被这类广告打成盲目 不过YY一下貌似也没啥大碍
先划拉两张往返机票 然后订一个开Boeing 737 Simulator的reward 剩下的全给大家订机票用... 
 
当然要是能Cash出来 更好不错~

Uptown Bronx

我和大苏顺着拥挤的人流匆匆赶向站台边,整架列车组并没有填满站台全部长度,人们都在往前冲着。跑出两节车厢的距离,在侧面看见红底白色的1字,从后方有一节车厢正在要和整架列车组挂钩上,这倒是新奇从来没有见过。跑过这节新车厢,我回头说“这儿就可以了吧”,但是却已经看不到大苏人在哪里了,于是我自己一个人跳上了倒数第二节车厢。

坐在最靠里靠后的角落,回头看后一节车厢里并不像有大苏的样子,看来真的是走散了,不过一会儿反正也都是回到学校。倒是假如不是急急忙忙赶车,不知道坐绿线走后门回去是不是更安全点,我可不想晚上从学校门口出来再碰上抢劫。斜对面坐着的是两个越南小姑娘Tia和Chu——比起小时候她们现在的相貌发型装扮简直不是一般的正点,聊起来听她们讲下次这种事情就应该每人上一个车厢,下了车再跟站台上见。车开不久,从我这一侧上来一位大妈,坐在我旁边之后嘴里仍是念念叨叨,看起来是很不熟悉路线。她转身过来问“到116街还有多远?”

“不远吧。我们现在是从Broadway上车走的么,然后后面就是要过…好像是Parkway, Lexington, Third Avenue然后也就到了。”我给她掰开揉碎了讲清楚。

大妈和Tia起了点争执非要她把穿了鞋的那只脚从座位上放下来放到地上她的黑书包上,我摇摇头对此不以为然。Tia轻轻哼着歌。一如既往的我的耳朵立刻竖了起来,虽然很奇怪旋律完全和我的印象对不上号,但是听到最后一句“桜舞い散る道の上で”的时候确认肯定没有听错。
“你这是哪个版本的?”我好奇地问。
“せいこ版的吧应该是。”
“噢,那我就不知道了,我只知道一个最新版的。”
“噢那个我好像也知道,好像是叫什么山直(やまなお)…”
“是山森(やまもり)吧…”Chu插嘴说。
“是森山直太郎(もりやま なおたろう)的啦。”和记忆挣扎了几秒我终于把名字准确地说了出来。

“对对,没错没错…”突然间大家都很兴奋,好像所有人都知道这首歌,连大妈都不例外。立刻在这节车厢的尾部开始了一场小合唱:“僕らはきっと待ってる…”。只是第一句一出来让我当时差点呕了一下,这帮人怎么声音毫无修饰,硬生生的把高音挤上去,简直跟那个童声合唱没什么区别。尽管如此,我还是一边听着一边自己回味原唱的调子。

过了不知道有多久各人都昏昏沉沉的坐在自己的位子上,想来是合唱的兴奋劲过去了都在半睡半醒的恍惚着,列车好像还要有小一阵子才会进站。从前部走过来一个流浪汉模样的人到我斜前方的门口,看上去是要准备下车。他突然向坐在他旁边的青年男性大声地斥责发难,好像刚才的合唱吵到了他。我惊诧于如此突然的变化,以至于每个字都从左耳朵冲进而从右耳朵立刻溢出,脑中如死机般背景空白一片,闪烁着两条提示语,something drastic will happen和look for the emergency break。我快速警惕地扫了一眼侧面车窗上方的紧急手刹,与此同时微弱的一点潜意识隐约在说事情不会那么简单。

列车还在高速前进。流浪汉已经把面前的车门拉开,出现的通道背景黑白闪耀如同无信号的电视屏幕。他似乎是相当的不耐烦,正对全开的车门颠着脚完全无视身边任何人的存在。坐在他旁边的男青年突然发难,起身把流浪汉的头向飞速划过的通道墙壁上按去。

I knew this is gonna happen! 看到门口情况突变,我迟疑了一下,还是向紧急刹车拉环摸去。拉下刹车的同时我站了起来,男青年回头冷漠的向我看了一眼,但倒也不像要立刻扑过来的样子。我尽可能平稳地走过两人向车厢前部走去。走过两人两步,那眼冷漠中的狡黠引起的心中的不安感让我回头,再掀开帘子,两个人诡异地全然不见了。

I knew why I felt “this won’t be all that simple”, and now I’m left alone. 我站在原地,脑中念头不停,警戒感充满全身。

New York Transit Museum

上次去NYC一回家立刻懊悔异常:明明杀到了轨道交通模范城市,结果愣是没想起来去逛公交博物馆,简直跟上此过水门而不入还傻乎乎照了张相有一拼。也没辙,这地点一般不是游客常规寻访地点,于是专门再跑一趟。

其实我从地铁站出来之后抬头一看飞机就找到北了,但是错误de估计了博物馆相对地铁站出口(而且是N个之中的1个 -_-b)的位置,于是顺利走反。在Brooklyn downtown转了一整圈找准方向了之后,先发现的是Transit大楼。

进去一问人家说这是办公楼,博物馆在对面的大白楼方向。



过了马路进了楼里问告诉说这儿也不是博物馆,博物馆在楼后面。于是绕过去,看到一地下入口,上面挂着个牌子俨然写着Museum… 半幸福半崩溃地当场晕了过去。



一进去首先展出的是关于挖掘和架桥的展品。


Triborough Bridge 横跨Bronx, Manhattan, Queens三个区,三架桥每架的设计都不一样。


当然重头戏还是下楼看地铁。这个博物馆就建在一个实际的地铁站里,连铁轨都是通着600V直流电的。有警告为证。-_-|


各种车厢。座位排列,座席材质,地图,通风(电扇),外形都各不一样。



Mosaic也当然是漂亮的没话说。


运钱车,这个比较猛,刚进去看的时候还嘀咕怎么没见过平时哪辆车里面有桌子和柜子 @_@车费最后都是这么拉到点钱中心的…上楼去还有详细的一段介绍收钱的录像和实物展出。


上楼之后还有关于地面交通的展出。


清洁燃料,有几个互动的模型设计很有意思,包括柴电混合动力,尾气处理等等,尤其适合小孩子来玩并且接受教育。


一展板的MTA Metrocard也够上如同集邮的花样丰富了。Metrocard之前使用的是金属token,第一张里面是设计者把自己名字给刻了进去,仔细看在上半部有微小的JV字样,据介绍是在印第二批的时候被发现出来于是统统拿回来返工。后面一张是展出的各种用来蒙混过关的伪token,其中几个看上去完全就是汽水瓶盖。-_-b


据说这个大号闸机偶尔会把人关在里面。


最后当然是到纪念品店逛逛。比较FT的是几乎所有东西都是写个数,上个色,再画个圈,就成品了,例如这成堆的T-shrit。Unit price $20. -_-|||


还有鼠标垫。这设计我也会做… -_-b

神清气爽de正式沦为无业人士

再怎么挥手也终要有分别的一刻,微笑着闪开视线让彼此交错。

走在每天下班的那条路上,雪仍然是堆得一人半高,滤过云层的太阳留下恰好下午5点的那份明亮,空气湿润而清新,伴着摘掉帽子围巾之后的凉爽,过夜冻上的冰面化得只剩下薄薄一层,蜿蜒而有致得汩汩流下,虽然到了最低处又是一脚踩进一片汪洋的小湖泊,但前面就是平整的大道,麻雀们列在树枝上齐唱着,这一刻最美好的景色。

We had a great time, but move on, we're done now.

我也脑残了

整天在公司说别人脑残今天自己也中招了一回。

今天下午开始下雪。我琢磨着这下了班回家之后再单出门来回走一小圈去存钱还不如让表师兄带我到北边超市里面去存钱,之后坐车回家,一步都不用多走,还可以拿张Transfer晚上再出来去打球时候坐车用。这计划放在平时的礼拜五那是极其标准并且完美无缺的,于是欢天喜地de下班出发,眼瞅着这雪好像稍微嫌大了点,路上车堵了点,但是人坐车里身上不受冻,脑子就没细想。

去超市存完钱,出来等10分钟不见公车影,突然意识到好像眼前车流的速度比步行还要慢 @_@ 那就走吧...
在极其恶劣和两个半月之前简直有一拼的能见度下一路走回家,马路上双向堵到全死,掰手指头数得差不多俨然所有从地铁站派出来北行的公车都被堵在马路上另一侧,要是还接着站着傻等回家的车,不冻死也饿死了,靠的...
幸好昨晚上貌似有先见之明(?)de炖了点姜末鸡汤。今儿也甭去打球了,老老实实蹲家里赶工。-_-b

I quit my job

总结一下,公司做事技术角度上的几个发现:

1) Totally no quality control. 完全没有质量控制。例:拿酰氯和胺做个酰胺化反应,二氯甲烷直接从瓶里倒,完全不干燥,过了夜板子上从上到下六个点,莫名其妙析出来的固体一抽就是产物,奇迹发生,50%产率完事。

2) Procedure is the god. 在经理的脑子里面,纸上怎么写的,就怎么一定原模原样的能给做出来,100%产率的一定就是100%产率(再参见第一条…文献的QC和公司的QC不一样的哎好不好),1%的产率就一定能每次都抠哧出来那1%。照着文献步骤把料一混,坐等奇迹发生,每次还都得一定会这样。

3) Attitudes. 把1和2加在一起,不经常出问题才怪。然后每个人看问题角度眼光重点都不一样,于是各种馊主意轮番上阵,其中能pinpoint problem的百年一遇,试验顺序不按照合理性/可能性/分析效率进行,而是根据出主意的人的地位等级高低来排。

How do you make a disaster? Just add them together.

然后做不来谁的问题? 当然不能怪经理吧。然后谁能保证自己操作/记录各种方面全都无懈可击呢,挑出一个小破刺儿(老狼:让你丫不戴帽子)来这就变成是你自己的问题了呗。于是Everything I do eventually will go wrong.

最后PhD们好像还有跟经理去讨论问题的地位…虽然本钱我未必没有。然后就变成要听先辈的做东撞西。另外,经理一人管40多号人,哪儿来的时间精力脑子仔细琢磨什么细节问题?

还有么? 好像暂时先这些。

公司里有些人做的顺风顺水,或者就算不顺也能事儿做的稳稳当当,不过这事儿好像我干不了哎。I don't seem to have the magic.
所以么,咱不耗了,撤。

回娘家一趟

每天打球吃饭拼游戏,得极品战例若干。晚上总是一点钟以后睡觉。
天气不错,屋里很暖和,灯光很充足,从落地窗看出去外面都还是那么好。
返程车站人满为患,回家路上后半段感觉司机俨然在使劲超速。-_-b
然后到家之后,开始又有点不习惯开始自己一个人住。

这战斗准备状态比较糟糕哎

家里菜肉俱备还是连着饥荒(?)了几天也不知道该做什么吃的好...今儿晚上先熬点儿菜粥。
右手中指手指甲劈了一小缝。
 
这么闹腾下去,就算平时一贯MD当XD,礼拜五岂不简直要XD变MS @_@
不行 要振作 做点大麻来吃 <-- 大枣+扁豆。我居然到现在还没有配眼镜 -_-|||

很长时间一度的消化道大扫除

Hi doctor. I’ve been puking since last night, this early morning to be exact. It started out when I woke up in the middle of nothing and got the feeling that something must be wrong. After lying on the bed for a while, which later proved to be the last thing that I can do over the past few hours, I went to the washroom and started the business, with first the stuff before sleep, then the dinner, and eventually some green bitter digestive gland excretion fluid. I’m also being evacuated from the other end as well, and so far things coming out from the rear seemed normal, in terms of shape, texture, smell, e.g., neither excessively stinky nor fragrant. No incidence of chronic gas currently, although it does happen from time to time in the past. The only thing I can think of about that right now is that it feels kind of hot during discharge, which really suggested, if not confirmed, that I might be having a fever, since I’ve been putting on extra layers onto myself and still felt cold. The biggest concern is the redness in the vomits as I hope it is the sauce rather than blood. So, I would be glad to know whatever suggestion, medication, treatment, etc., that I can get from you for this nausea, fever, and overall a seemingly stomach inflammation. Thank you.

Guys, don’t reply this in a readable format… you know why. //wink
